Heating & Cooling FAQ

What is the Heat Pump?

They are powered by electricity and transfer heat using refrigerant to provide comfort all year round. Because they handle both cooling and heating, homeowners may not need to install separate systems to heat their homes. In colder climates, an electric heat strip can be added to the indoor fan coil for additional capabilities. Heat pumps do not burn fossil fuel like furnaces do, making them more environmentally friendly.

What's difference between Air Conditioner and Heat Pump?

While essentially identical in cooling mode, heating mode is a completely different story. Air conditioners do not provide heating, but heat pumps do. Thanks to a reversing valve in the outdoor unit, a heat pump can absorb heat energy from outside air, even in extremely cold temperatures, and transfer the heat inside the home, where it releases the heat into the air. A heat pump can heat and cool, but an air conditioner cannot, which is the primary difference between the two HVAC systems. An air conditioner is typically paired with a furnace to provide heat during the cold months. Together, an air conditioner and furnace are a complete heating and cooling system.

What is life expectation of my Heat Pump?

The life expectancy of a heat pump depends on several factors, such as the type of heat pump, your location, and how well the heat pump is maintained. Heat pumps normally last an average of 15 years, though some can wear out after a decade. Some of the newer units being manufactured today can last a bit longer. The factor most important in determining the lifespan of your heat pump is maintenance.

Heat Pump maintenance

The best way to keep your heat pump running efficiently is to keep it well maintained. If you are using your heat pump regularly, you should be getting your heat pump serviced by a credited technician annually to keep it well maintained and operating at its best. If you haven't had your unit serviced in a while and think it might benefit from some care, then our installers are on hand to help.
In-between services there are steps you can take to make sure your heat pump runs efficiently. Keeping heat pump filters cleaned ensures undisturbed airflow maximising efficiency. Vacuuming to keep dust accumulation minimal is also good practice as it reduced the particles in the air for the filter to remove keeping it cleaner for longer. Keep debris away from your outdoor unit to keep airflow efficient and ensure that any water is free to drain away.
